About Us

At Ballinteer Montessori School, we believe in the profound truth expressed by Maria Montessori: “The child is a miracle of creation and this should be deeply felt by the educator.” Since its inception, our school has embraced this philosophy, offering a Montessori education that prioritises the holistic development of every child. Situated in the heart of Dublin 14, Ballinteer Montessori School provides a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment where children can thrive physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Final Edit - We Invite Parents

We invite parents to visit our classrooms, meet our educators, and experience our Montessori environment firsthand.

The Montessori Philosophy:

The Montessori Method of education is a comprehensive attitude and approach toward nurturing young minds. Maria Montessori, through decades of careful study and observation, discovered that children possess an 'Absorbent Mind' during their early years, enabling them to learn effortlessly from their environment. At Ballinteer Montessori, we honour this principle by providing a setting where children can explore, discover, and grow at their own individual pace.

The Montessori approach focuses on freedom within limits, allowing children to develop concentration, independence, and self-confidence. Our classrooms are designed to encourage active learning, offering a wide array of materials and activities that stimulate the child’s natural curiosity and desire to engage with the world.

NEW About Us - Why first 6 years are crucial NEW-1

Why the First Six Years Are Crucial

Maria Montessori emphasised the importance of the first six years of life as the most critical for intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development. During this period, children experience sensitive periods, where they are naturally attuned to acquiring specific knowledge or skills. Our educational approach is meticulously structured to support children through these stages, ensuring that each child can maximise their learning potential.

Children at Ballinteer Montessori are provided with opportunities to explore practical life exercises, including pouring, polishing, threading, sweeping, and dressing frames. These activities are not merely tasks; they are foundational exercises that cultivate independence, coordination, concentration, and self-esteem. By mastering these exercises, children gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence that shapes their future learning journey.

Practical Life Skills: Building Independence and Confidence

Every task, from pouring water to threading beads, is designed to foster a child’s self-reliance and competence. Maria Montessori famously observed that a child’s plea of “Help me do it alone” reflects a natural drive for independence, and our role as educators is to guide without intruding.

At Ballinteer Montessori, these exercises are carefully structured to encourage:

  • Coordination – refining fine and gross motor skills through repeated, purposeful movement.

  • Concentration – enhancing focus by allowing children to engage deeply with tasks at their own pace.

  • Confidence – building self-esteem as children achieve tasks independently.

  • Order – fostering a sense of organisation, discipline, and respect for the environment

Sensorial Learning: Engaging the Senses

Sensorial education is another pivotal aspect of Montessori learning. At Ballinteer Montessori, we provide materials that refine the senses, helping children to categorise, compare, and understand their environment. These exercises include exploring textures, shapes, colours, weights, sounds, and smells, all of which contribute to cognitive development and an awareness of the world around them.

Our classrooms are designed to allow freedom of choice, giving children the opportunity to engage with the materials that interest them most, while subtly guiding them to develop higher-order thinking skills. This approach nurtures problem-solving abilities, logical reasoning, and creativity, laying the groundwork for a lifelong love of learning.

Language Development and Literacy

Language is a core element of Montessori education, and at Ballinteer Montessori, we implement a rich, immersive language programme. Children are introduced to spoken and written language through interactive exercises that emphasise vocabulary, phonics, and storytelling.

Our multi-sensory approach allows children to absorb language naturally, integrating it into their daily lives rather than imposing it through rote memorisation. By encouraging reading, writing, and verbal expression, we ensure that children develop strong communication skills, which are crucial for academic success and social development.

About Lang Dev and Literacy
Mathematics through practical experience

Mathematics Through Practical Experience

Mathematics is introduced in a concrete, hands-on manner that aligns with the Montessori principle of learning through experience. Counting beads, number rods, and practical exercises allow children to visualise and internalise mathematical concepts. By connecting abstract ideas to tangible activities, children develop a deep understanding of numbers, sequences, and problem-solving, preparing them for more complex mathematical reasoning in later years.

Social and Emotional Development

At Ballinteer Montessori, children learn to respect one another, cooperate, and navigate social interactions within a structured environment. Group activities, collaborative exercises, and peer mentoring cultivate empathy, patience, and leadership skills.

Through these experiences, children develop a positive self-concept and resilience, essential traits for thriving in a diverse and dynamic world.

Outdoor Learning and Physical Development

We recognise the importance of physical activity and outdoor exploration in early childhood education. Our facilities provide children with ample outdoor space for gross motor development, sensory play, and nature-based learning. Outdoor experiences reinforce classroom learning, offering practical lessons in science, observation, and environmental stewardship, while also supporting health and well-being.
